At most recent count, the death toll was at 858 people and expected to rise further as rescue teams continued finding bodies buried among the debris from the storms. Ensuing disease outbreaks from the awful conditions left behind killed an additional 89, according to local authorities and aid workers. 189,000 people remain in evacuation centers, and the storms are estimated to have impacted 4.35 million people overall.
464 casualties have so far been reported for Typhoon Ketsana, which formed on September 23. Typhoon Parma, which followed on September 26, claimed 465 lives.
