Every year more than 20 million people die of starvation. Even more staggering, the amount of people who do not get enough to eat on a daily basis is about 925 million people (98% of them live in developing countries).
As world food production exists now, enough food is produced to feed each individual in the world. The problem is that much of the world population is too poor to afford any food or those who can afford it are eating an inordinate share.
To add to what andyeah said, thinkquest.org states that 15 million children die annually due to hunger. It is estimated that 800 million people suffer from hunger and malnutrition. In 2008, almost 9 million children died before their fifth birthday.
