The study used the most comprehensive methods yet to estimate that at least 421,000 envenomings (venomous bites) and 20,000 deaths from snakebites occur each year, especially in South and South East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. India has the highest estimated annual envenomings and deaths: 81,000, and 11,000 respectively.
This is a very difficult statistic to come up with, but a study done at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka produced results estimating that more than 90,000 deaths a year could be attributed to snake bites. They estimate that annually, anywhere from 1.2 to 5.5 million snake bites occur; however, the venom enters the bloodstream in only about 25% of these cases. Researchers reported that sadly, the exact figures are unknown because they believe many snake bites go unreported. For example, only about 8.5% of victims in Nigeria sought treatment for their bites.
