From the first people to reach the peak in 1954 to June 2000, only 189 people had reached the summit. This averages out to about four people a year, although some years have more climbers than others. There have been particularly more in recent years. This does not include, of course, the people who have failed to reach the summit and those who have died trying; the latter amount nearly equals the amount who have made it.
Unlike Everest not many people make it to the summit of K2. Many years no one makes it. Between 1997 and 2007 five years went without anyone reaching the summit. In total only around 250 people have made it up and at least 55 have died trying.
