While consumer interest in green books is ever-increasing, it’s less about who and how many people are buying and reading them, and more about who’s producing them and how readily available these options are. Members of the Green Press Initiative, which conducted a study on the environmental practices and impacts of the book publishing industry, have begun the Book Industry Treatise on Environmentally Responsible Publishing, which set goals for the book publishing industry, and which over 140 publishers have signed. The GPI estimates that only about 10% of the book industry’s products are made with recycled fibers.
