Hopefully, we’re passed the period during which climate change was something you could choose to believe in. Scientists have proved that climate change is happening, and they have also proved that humans are contributing to the toll it has taken on the community. However, some people are still unsure of of humans’ role in climate change. However, a recent poll indicated that 73% of people across the world think climate change deserves a higher priority politically. Because of this, it is safe to say that at least that number “believe” in climate change, and also believe in it strongly. However, I would estimate the number of people who accept climate change to be in the high eighties or low nineties. With the scientific info, I think only the fringe completely disregards climate change. However, people do still greatly disagree regarding what should be done about climate change, and to some degree about how it is caused.
According to this 2008 Nature article, which lists the results of a Nature Conservatory study, only 18% of Americans believe that climate change is real, caused by humans, and harmful. This study also listed political party affiliation as the biggest influence of climate change beliefs.
However, there is also this study from MIT, which lists climate change as the number one environmental concern of American’s: (http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2006/survey.html)
Therefore, although people may not want to believe that it’s true, they think that it is an important issue to address!
