According to a report put out by the NGO Development and Peace, there are an estimated 25 million landless people in Brazil out of a population of over 180 million.  In Brazil, 65% of the population owns 3% of the arable land.  In response to a long history of land access inequality, there is a giant social movement called the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST – Movimento dos trabalhadores rurais sem terra) which is composed of over 1.5 million members.
