According to http://geography.about.com/od/obtainpopulationdata/a/uspopulation.htm, there are over 311 million people in the United States. This means the U.S. has the third largest population in the world, behind China and India. It is estimated that by 2020 there will be approximately 336,031,546 people.
In addition, by 2050, the U.S. population is expected to reach over 420 million people. The fertility rate in the U.S. is about 2.1, which means the population should stay pretty steady. But we have to consider immigration as a large factor in our increase in population, as well.
According to the US Census Bureau, as of June 24, 2011, the US population reached 311,832,785 people. The world population at this time was 6,950,965,886.
