Statistics aren’t readily available on the amount of people using coal in the United States, but it does supply 22% of the nation’s energy needs. Most of that, however, is directed towards industrial power; about one percent of coal produced in the US goes towards domestic heating.

In China, a country with incredibly rich coal mines, 400 million people are said to rely on coal for domestic heating purposes.
