The poverty line in Indian currency is 300 Rs/ month. Based on this about 300 million people are living below the poverty line.
According to a study done by the BBC, and data provided by the Indian Government, 37% of India’s 1.21 billion person population currently lives below the poverty line. This breaks down to 447,700,000 people, alarming enough, while some estimates put the percentage at an overwhelming 77%. The country’s main planning body, the Planning Commission, has put forth that an individual income of 25 rupees (52 cents) per day was adequate to provide for food, education, and health needs. On top of all of this, India is fighting an inflation rate of 9.78% a 13 month high.
