Innumberable. Air and water pollution cause 750,000 premature deaths a year. The European Union’s standards state that only 1% out of the 560 million Chinese living in cities breathe safe air. Beyond counting the number of deaths due to the pollution, though, it is hard to count all those harmed by wastewater contamination and chemicals from factories and even to know the full effect on those 99% of urban-dwelling Chinese breathing the polluted air. Then there are the deaths and harmful effects of the lead and cadmium poisoning to countless children in China and the U.S. Finally, toxic incinerators burn and produce toxic ash that travels far, past China’s borders, and who can know the true impact of that?
