How many people are employed by the coal mining industry?

There are about 174,000 people directly employed by the coal mining industry, between mining, transportation, and power production. This represents about 0.12% of the U.S. workforce, although these numbers don’t include indirect employment (towns that wouldn’t exist if not for a coal plant, for example).
