About 6 percent of the population is vegetarian, though the number goes up if you include people who eat fish or chicken but not red meat. It’s hard to tell exactly, but it seems like at any given time, it’s fair to say that 12 million Americans are vegetarian.
This question is much harder to answer than it appears, and there is no one agreed-on answer. The number of vegetarians in America fluctuates wildly. Many people are interested in vegetarianism, but many of those people still eat meat anyway. Furthermore, there are several different degrees of vegetarianism: some eat dairy products and/or eggs while others don’t, and so on.
