How many pencils are thrown away each year?

There’s no good numbers on the amount of pencils thrown away each year, but it’s estimated that about 14 billion wood pencils are produced each year.  4 billion trees are also cut down each year for the paper industry as a whole (including pencils).  EarthZone also touts the number of 14 billion pencils produced, but then also says that they are all thrown away.  So, again, the number of pencils chucked each year isn’t exact, but it’s somewhere close to 14 billion.
