The Eiffel tower was not made with panels. It was built by iron workers and is comprised of 9,441 tons of wrought iron, this amount being substantially economic at the time. As a demonstartion of this, if the entire structure was melted down to fill the 125 meter square base it would fill only 6 cm (2.36 in) of the square.
