There is a pretty large trade in illegal pangolin meat, despite protective policies in China, Taiwan, India and Nepal. Between 2000 and 2003, the trade amounted to 240 tons of pangolin meat per year, and in 2008, smugglers were caught with 13.8 tons of meat–or approximately 2,500 pangolins. Using this number, the 2000-2003 average was about 43,478 poached pangolins per year. Poaching has decreased in the last ten years due to smaller numbers of pangolins and fewer free smugglers.
