I couldn’t track down a number for the world wide statistic, but 35.5 million pounds of oysters are harvested and consumed annually in the United States alone. This makes it one of the most widely consumed and popular seafoods in the country.
Worldwide, almost 2 billion pounds of oysters are eaten every year. From 1990 to 1995 (just 5 years!), Americans consumed about 50 million pounds of oysters — that’s 10 million pounds of oysters per year.
