We can’t say exactly because we are still discovering species on land and in water. There are 1.8 million formally described species of life. There is a very roughly estimated 5 to 30 million species of life on this planet, which includes varying types of bacteria.
Marine biodiversity reflects this discrepancy in discovered species and undiscovered species. There are about 300,000 formally described marine species (of that 1.8 million), but there is believed to be anywhere from 800,000 to several million marine species in total.
