I dont have a precise answer to this question, but it turns out that it is usually cheaper to make new shipping containers in the country in which the goods are being manufactured than to reuse old ones. (It is strange how this global economy works sometimes.) So this means that many of the shipping containers are used once and then sit around waiting for someone to put them to good use.
Ever thought of living in a house made of shipping containers? Check out some possible designs here (http://designcrave.com/2009-06-22/10-brilliant-boxy-and-sustainable-shipping-container-homes/)
