Besides the current oil spill, I found records of 4 oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico: in 1979 the Ixtoc 1 oil well blew up spilling 140 million gallons, in 1990 the tanker Mega Borg ran aground just outside Galveston spilling 5.1 million gallons, in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina an estimated 7 million gallons were spilled from various sources, and in 2008 two oil tankers collided, spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil. There have also been a few oil spills in river deltas in Mississippi and Lousiana.
Oil also seeps naturally into the Gulf of Mexico continually, and has done so for thousands of years.
