I can only find record of one other oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 1979 pouring 140 million gallons of oil into the Gulf.
Oil spills occur more frequently than you think, but most of them are caused by 1 to 10 barrels of oil going into the ocean so they aren’t recognized as news to the media. They usually occur around ports.
Natural oil seeps put oil into the Gulf of Mexico every day, and have done so for thousands of years. Estimated amounts vary from a few hundred to a few hundred thousand barrels per year.
