Most of the world’s offshore wells are in the US sector of the Gulf of Mexico, where more than 4000 platforms support more than 5000 individual wells. The next most would probably be in the North Sea, but I have no figures for the count.
If you mean active drilling rigs, the number will be much less – in Sept 2010 there were 19 rigs operating offshore Louisiana and one offshore Texas. The total world offshore rig count in Sept 2010 was 338.
Greenpeace says there’s around 570 platforms in the North Sea, which sounds about right. The rest of the world might have on that order as well.
