Leading scientists in the field believe there are over 1.4 million undiscovered species including animals, plants, and microorganisms. We have only explored a small percentage of the world’s oceans.
Estimates can range from 1.75 million (Catalog of Life), but the UN Global Diversity Assessment has estimated that up to 13.6 million new species may be found. A large bulk of these will not be new fuzzy animals, but probably insects and microbes and fungi.
