According to an article written in the New York Times, scientists have discovered and catalogued 1.3 million species and researchers report more than 15,000 new species each year. However, a new study by Dr. Worm et al. estimate that there are 8.7 million species on the planet, plus or minus 1.3 million. According to this calculation, scientists have yet to discover more than 7.4 million species.

New species are being discovered all the time. I remember reading an article awhile back about how a new species of bird was discovered in the Hawaiian Islands. I found it amazing that such a popular destination still had many undiscovered secrets. Sadly, I was not able to locate that article online.
