How many new coal-fired power plants opened in China over the past year?

    The best numbers I can find are from 2006, when the New York Times published a statistic that a new coal-fired power plant opens in China “every week to ten days”, which would put the annual number at that point between 36 and 52.

    I’ve linked to another, more recent New York Times article that estimates the growth in China’s thermal electricity generation capacity at more than 40,000 megawatts in 2008 (see the graphic within the article).
