It’s difficult to find an exact number of mines, but the EPA estimates that by 2012, 2200 square miles of Appalachian forest will have been cleared by mountain top removal mining, prominently in West Virginia and Kentucky, with each state using 1,000 tons of explosives per day. As of 2010, an area about the size of the state of Delaware is being mined.
