There are 1,458 mines in the U.S. as of last year (totals taken at end of year). Please see the link below for a break down by state of mines.
The count in the other answer is just for coal mines. There are many other mines for copper, gold, lead, gypsum, etc. Sorry I don’t have a number. But if you count all the inactive mines, there are probably tens of thousands in the US.
