There are 79 miles of bike lanes in the city of San Francisco. This is including a rather recent plan that added 34 miles throughout the city. These plans of adding new lanes went into effect in August of 2010 and not only added mileage, but ensured the safety of bicyclists. In 2006, a ban against creating new lanes for bikers was set in place until courts could approve that these additions would be safe. Once the plans were approved, the four year long ban was lifted and gave rise to 35 new bike projects in the city.
