How many leatherback sea turtles are left in the Pacific?

Less than 1500 leatherbacks are estimated to be alive today. Sea turtles are endangered by a combination of human activity, such as shrimp trawls, which often trap and kill sea turtles, and their own life history. Sea turtles usually don’t begin breeding till they are 20 to 30 years old, which means that population recovery happens very slowly due to long generation time.
