The atmosphere of the earth is comprised of the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Ionosphere, the Exosphere and the Magnetosphere. The Atmosphere is a general name given to the layer of gases that surrounds the material body of sufficient mass.
The atmosphere is made up of five layers. The layer closest to the earth is the troposphere, which contains about 50 percent of the Earth’s atmosphere and is where weather occurs. Other layers are the stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. Generally scientists refer to the ionosphere as an extension of the thermosphere, which makes up less than 0.1 percent of the total mass of the atmosphere.
