Very few reach capacity each year. The number of operating landfills in the US fell sharply after 1988, so waste management companies have taken to expanding existing sites. Furthermore, new technology has enabled waste managers to compact garbage more tightly, allowing more efficient use of available space. Recycling has also increased greatly in the US, lowering demand for landfill space.
