There are 1,500 active volcanoes, meaning that they have erupted in the last 10,000 years. Most of these volcanoes lie on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
This is a difficult question, and it depends on how you define a volcano. According to the Smithsonian, right now there are probably around 20 active volcanoes, but historically, in the past 10,000 years, there have been around 1,300 documented eruptions. So it depends on whether a volcano is still a volcano if has stopped erupting.
