There are hundreds of varieties of lettuce around the world, but they’re generally broken into 4 main types: Cos (Romaine), Crisphead, Butterhead, and Looseleaf. Looseleaf is unique because the leaves are attached to the stem and not the lettuce head. Butterhead lettuce has a loose head with glassy green leaves. Crisphead has very little nutritional value and resembles cabbage. Cos/Romaine lettuce is the darker lettuce that you see and has very strong flavor to it.
