Worldwide there are said to be 60 species of birch trees. There are 10 species in Canada and the Northern United States combined. They are used for lumber since the wood grain takes stain well. They are tough and tolerant trees and found as both trees and shrubs. They grow easily and often grow first when a landscape has been disturbed and/or become a wasteland.
