How many illegally-traded species are brought to the U.S. each year?

There are no good estimates for the US demand of illegal wildlife importation. This is because of the nature of the act itself. It is illegal and people are trying to hide this information to stay out of prison. CITES estimates the illegal demand to be close to the demand for legal wildlife. The United States purchases about 20% of all legal wildlife trade globally.

Here are statistics for Legal trade.
2.8 Billion Dollars (2007) with 179,323 shipments declared in 2007.

This is an increasingly profitable and large industry. The amount of shipments increase every year.
