Although it is hard to predict how many will be open next year, there are plans in place for there to be 46 RETAIL hydrogen refueling stations in Calfornia by 2014. Currently, there are 24 total stations, but only 6 are open to the public (the rest are used for private truck fleets and the like). The California Fuel Cell Partnership hopes to have the 40 new stations built by 2012. Some may be open earlier, but for now 2014 is the goal year.
By 2017, the demand for hydrogen stations is estimated to dictate the need for 50 to 100 stations in California.
