One preliminary study done in early 2007 found that 915 square kilometers of Himalayan glaciers have melted between 1999 and 2004. Satellite data from Indian Space Applications Center indicate that more than 1000 glaciers have retreated by around 16%. The Chhota Shigri glacier appears to have lost an average of over one meter of ice a year.
