Literally hundreds of plant and animal species placed on the Endangered Species List have been saved from extinction in the United States. The most important reason for this is probably that species placed on the list receive protections for their habitat, preventing the last stronghold populations from being wiped out by habitat destruction, and allowing them to recover. According to one study, over ninety percent of all species placed on the Endangered Species List have seen their numbers either increase or at least stabilize, thanks to governmental protections. What is certain is that without passage of the Endangered Species Act in the early 70s, many species still with us today would have gone extinct years ago.
