How many grizzlies are there in California?

As far as I can tell, there are not any grizzlies left in California. According to the California State Library, there used to be a very large grizzly bear population across northern California. However, the onset of the Gold Rush in the late 19th century brought with it a sudden influx of settlers, which did not bode well for the grizzlies. The last grizzly was shot in 1922, in Tulane County.

The running joke in California is that the animal that is on their flag cannot be found in their state. Grizzly’s used to be everywhere in California but cannot be found today.
