I believe this data is relatively recent. The number of mountain gorillas is roughly 600. Estern lowland populations are slightly better than that, hovering around 2,500 individuals, with western lowland populations hovering around 50,000.

Gorilla populations have been decreasing as the species is in danger of extinction. Scientists estimate that there are only about 50,000 gorillas left in the wild in Africa. “Most of these are western lowland gorillas; there are only about 600 mountain gorillas and 2,500 eastern lowland gorillas. Mountain gorillas are on the verge of extinction.”
