According to the site linked below, there are an estimated 50,000 gorillas in the wild in Africa. Populations are decreasing, however.
A discovery made in 2008 found that there were 125,000 more western lowland gorillas living in the forests of the Republic of Congo covering an area of 18,000 square miles. The new estimate puts their population between 175,000 and 225,000. Gorillas face threats from the Ebola virus and “bush meat,” the hunting of wild animals for commercial purposes.
