There are mainly three subspecies of gorillas. There are currently about 50,000 western lowland gorillas living in the wild in West Central Africa; 2,500 eastern lowland gorillas in the wild; and only about 600 mountain gorillas in the wild, living in the Virunga Mountains and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda. All three subspecies are listed as endangered.
