The California golden trout, which are native to the southern fork of the Kern River, are threatened by environmental degradation, hybridization with rainbow trout, competition with other trout species and being eaten by other trout. These issues are so problematic that a UC Davis report estimates that only 400 to 2600 unhybridized golden trout left in California, principally near Volcano Creek.
