Unfortunately I cannot find reliable statistics of active gold mines in the United States; however I can tell you that there are 21 active mines in Nevada which currently has the largest gold deposit in the world. Nevada produces 78% of United States gold, which was 175,000 of the United States 240,000 kilograms of gold in 2010. United States gold production ranks fourth world wide behind South Africa, Australia, and China. There are only thirteen U.S. states that still mine for gold and Nevada’s share is far greater than any other states. There are not many more than 21 active gold mines in the United States.
