Glaciers are diminishing worldwide at an increasing rate, which affects ecosystems worldwide in a variety of ways, from changes in water levels to loss of habitats to endangerment of species. For example, glacier loss in Kilimanjaro has occurred at a 2.5 percent rate annually for the past two decades. Prior to 1989, this rate was only one percent.
