There are approximately eight different types of squid that fall into the giant category. It is difficult to get an accurate count on just how many giant squids exist. This is primarily because of how deep down in the water they are. Giant squids prefer cooler waters and tend to live close to the ocean floor (Squid World, 2009).
I have not found an incredibly reliable source for this information, but the Wikipedia article on number of sightings and species is mostly gleaned from information gathered by a marine biologist named Angel Guerra. The Wiki article claims that according to him, their have been 592 confirmed sightings of giant squid. Further research seems to suggest that Guerra is a respected biologist when it comes to squid, though you’ll have to decide about Wiki’s reliability for yourself.
