Not many, and the numbers are unclear because most of the giant squid we have access to are corpses that have washed up on the beach or been caught in fishing nets. The first live giant squid was photographed in 2004, and one was captured in 2006, in both cases by Japanese scientists.
The corpses of the squid have been found off of all of the world’s oceans; in 2011, some fishermen found a 25 foot squid dying off the coast of Florida.
