U.S. air carriers used a total of about 15.5 trillion gallons of fuel for both domestic and international flights in 2010. This is about 1-2 trillion gallons less than usual if one compares 2010 to the years 2000-2008.  The cost per gallon of airline fuel has more than tripled since 2000 from bout $0.79 to $2.85
