How many galaxies have been defined so far?

According to this article, it’s hard to know for sure. Astronomers estimate that there are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the whole universe. We have observed many of these, but it’s hard to keep a tally – for example in the image in the article, there are 10,000 galaxies visible. As our telescopes get bigger and better, they will be able to look further back in time, basically, as they see further away (because it takes so much time for light to get to us.)
