The average number of yearly forest fires varies depending on a number of factors, including weather, time of year, if the fire was reported, etc. The National Interagency Fire Center currently estimates that 48,022 forest fires occurred from January 1, 2010 through September 21, 2010. 2009’s yearly average was estimated at 70,136. 2008’s yearly average was roughly 67,885.
